MG&A Pet owner research – How concerned are you about what you are feeding your dog?
The press is often littered with articles on what to feed and what not to feed your dog. A raw food-based diet is one approach that has grown in popularity over the last decade, but along with this growing popularity has come growing controversy regarding the benefits of feeding a raw diet and the risk of the diet containing pathogens such as Salmonella, Campylobacter, E coli and Clostridium perfringens, Clostridium botulinum and Staphylococcus aureus, all of which are known human and canine pathogens, not to mention Neospora canium found in raw beef, Nanophytus salmincola found in raw salmon and Trichinella pathogens which can make a dog sick and are potentially fatal. Bones can also be a choking hazard or break teeth. That said, advocates of raw diets, however, site health and safety benefits associated with knowing exactly what is being fed and also the fact that a raw diet can satiate the dog’s natural instincts.
MG&A asked dog owners how concerned they are that the may not be feeding their dog the correct / best diet for them.
A third of owners (31%) were concerned or very concerned that they may not be feeding their dog the correct or best diet for them, whilst just under half (43%) had no concerns.
According to Dogs Trust, on the whole, a good commercial complete food should provide all the essential nutrients for your dog.
About the sample
MG&A conducted an online survey among 250 dog owners in December 2016. The questions ranged from the serious to the frivolous.
All respondents were dog owners:
• Aged or 21y or older with 9% over 60y
• Either totally or jointly responsible for the health and well-being of the dog
• Living in UK
In addition to at least one dog:
• 27% had a cat
• 10% had a small furry
