It’s September and everyone is back to school. This got us thinking, how well “educated” are our furry children?

We asked dog owners, “Please be as honest as you can, how confident do you feel that [NAME] would do each of the following on your command?

Stay / wait
Come back to you
Drop something e.g. a ball
Walk to heel off lead
Do at least one trick e.g. shake paws, play dead, sit up and beg etc

Response options were: Always on command, Mostly on command, Sometimes on command, Rarely on command, Never on command.


More three quarters (78%) felt their dog would sit on command, with over half feeling their dog would most of the others in the list on command (stay/wait – 68%; come back – 69%; fetch – 54%; drop – 60%, do at least one trick – 69%). Walking to heel off lead appeared to be the least well learned skill with only 42% saying this always or mostly happened with their dog.

Maybe it is back to school for some of us!

About the sample

MG&A conducted an online survey among 250 dog owners in December 2016. The questions ranged from the serious to the frivolous.

All respondents were dog owners:
• Aged or 21y or older with 9% over 60y
• Either totally or jointly responsible for the health and well-being of the dog
• Living in UK

In addition to at least one dog:
• 27% had a cat
• 10% had a small furry
