A Happy New Year to you all. On 31 December, over 110,000 people from almost 100 different countries came together for the Mayor’s London New Year’s Eve Fireworks. This special event comprised 12,000 fireworks and for the first time ever, viewers could enjoy an exclusive live 360° view of the fireworks online with the BBC. Millions also tuned in to watch the event live on TV.
However, there’s a downside. The RSPCA estimated that 45 per cent of dogs in the UK show signs of fear when they hear fireworks. A town in Italy has recently switched to silent fireworks to reduce anxiety in both domestic animals and wildlife. How would you feel about silent fireworks; genius or a kill joy? MG&A asked a survey of dog owners how they felt.
We asked: A town in Italy has switched to silent fireworks to reduce anxiety in both domestic animals and wildlife. How do you feel about this idea if it were introduced in UK?
An overwhelming 70% of dog owners agreed (25%) or agreed strongly (45%) with the suggestion of silent fireworks, with only 10% disagreeing or disagreeing strongly. Let’s hope the powers that be give this some thought.
MG&A conducted an online survey among 250 dog owners in December 2016. The questions ranged from the serious to the frivolous.
About the sample:
All respondents were dog owners:
• Aged or 21y or older with 9% over 60y
• Either totally or jointly responsible for the health and well-being of the dog
• Living in UK
In addition to at least one dog:
• 27% had a cat
• 10% had a small furry
