MG&A: Veterinary market research: Be honest, have you ever had a “Fenton” moment?

MG&A: Veterinary market research: Be honest, have you ever had a “Fenton” moment?

Many of you will remember the incident of the lively black Labrador, Fenton, and his owner’s attempt to stop his dog chasing deer in London’s Richmond Park. His efforts were in vain as the frightened animals stampeded across a busy road, forcing cars to stop and leaving an exasperated owner swearing in despair. Perhaps understandably, he has not been spotted walking Fenton – believed to be a former guide dog – in the park since the incident.

Chasing livestock, of course, it not a laughing matter. In a recent article in Farmer’s Weekly (https://www.fwi.co.uk/livestock/cost-dog-attacks-livestock-rockets-1-6m), the cost of dog attacks on livestock has risen to a staggering £1.6m; not to mention the ensuing welfare issue and trauma to the stock person who finds the aftermath. This prompted us to ask:

“It is well documented that some dogs like to chase. Bearing in mind that this survey is completely anonymous, has your dog ever chased sheep, horses or cows?”

Results

Whilst half of owners, 52%, stated that their dog had never chased a horse, cow or sheep and had no inclination so to do, between a quarter and a third, (29%), declared that their dog would if they could! A staggering 19% of dog owners admitted that their dog had chased an animal (much higher than the 7% figure cited by NFU) and of these dogs, most (79%), had actually caught the animal; resulting in the animal being killed or wounded in 42% of these cases.

Of course, if you would like to discuss the possibility of conducting your own bespoke survey, we’d also love to hear from you.
